Oncology

Cancer is one of the major leading causes of death worldwide, accounts for 10million deaths every year. It is a complex disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth and division, affecting various tissues and organs. It arises from DNA mutations that alter normal cellular signaling pathways, leading to tumor development and progression. The hallmarks of cancer include sustained proliferation, resistance to growth inhibitors and apoptosis, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Treatment approaches encompass both conventional methods like surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, as well as emerging therapies such as immunotherapy and targeted molecular interventions. The choice of treatment depends on factors including cancer type, stage, and patient health. While current therapies aim to inhibit or slow cancer growth, they often have adverse effects on normal cells and tissues. Plant-based compounds have been a significant source of anticancer drugs, with 60-70% of clinically used treatments derived from natural products including vinca alkaloids, Taxol, and podophyllotoxin etc. Phytochemicals offer potential advantages such as reduced toxicity and availability in ingestive forms. NBI Biosciences is working on plant based anticancer drugs by investigating new plant molecules and enhancing their delivery using nanotechnology, which can improve drug solubility, stability, and targeting.
